LIMA Class 37’s 1984-88

When  Lima brought out the Class 73 – it was, for the time, a very good representation of the real thing. When they announced their next Loco would be a Class 37, I thought great, we can move on from the Hornby 37 with Class 47 bogies!!!! What a disappointment it was when it arrived. To get it to a reasonable standard took a lot of work. I have already outlined the main amendments in the BR Blue section, the previous post to this one. Anyway here are a few of my attempts for 84-88.

Again, many have been sold, so only four loco’s from this era.

LIMA BR Blue Class 37 variations

I prepared these Loco’s for an article in Model Rail. They demonstrate the differences within the Class. All are detailed, have lights and are lowered on the chassis. I would say that in the day if we wanted a better Class 37 we had little choice than to detail the loco’s with brass etches and cast parts. Even the detailed models do not sit that well with the latest models but we really had to ‘model’ in those days to get a reasonable result. All Loco’s have Ultrascale wheels with extra pick-ups.

Many of the original loco’s are sold, so this post is not quite as comprehensive as the article in MR.

Fast Fitted Freight 1960’s (00)

Another 60’s vacuum braked wagon rake. This is made up of 12 vans plus a brake van. The vans are from BR and big four origins. They have been given various weathering, from light to medium. All have been fitted with white metal scale vacuum brake hoses.

Coal Train -Partially Fitted 60’s – 70’s (00)

This is my attempt at a coal train of 4 wheel vacuum and non fitted wagons. The train comprises of 22 wagons plus a brake van. the first 17 wagons are vacuum fitted and the final 5 are non-fitted. Each one has been weathered to various degrees, from absolutely awful to nearly ex-works. A lot of weathering methods were used from spraying, dry brushing and painting with a little talc to create depth, especially on the rust patches. They are also mixed up in the rake to make it varied when passing.

Freightliner set of 5 (FFA/FGA) OO (2)

This is another set of Hornby super detailed wagons, these are exactly  the same as the previous set. This time the wagons are loaded with the ‘Bulktainers’ of 30′. The main companies using these conatiners are UBC, IBC and IFF, all are included in this rake. Some quite extreme weathering is used on these wagons.

Freightliner Set of 5 (FFA/FGA) OO (1)

Here we have a set of five Hornby super detailed Freightliner wagons based on the late 90’s to early 00’s. The wagons are all weathered the same, but the containers are of sizes 20′ and 40′ and are standard (for the time) with two ‘Tanktainers’ added for interest. You usually see a space or two in the rakes but these Hornby are very old and do not lend themselves easily to vacant spaces. The wagon conversions came as a full kit for five wagons, but I can not remember who did them! During the course of the conversion you lower the bogies on the chassis and these make a much better presentation. The containers are variously weathered and include patchwork painting and general grime/rust.

O Gauge Wagons

Here is a batch of wagons that have not yet appeared on this site. This is a batch that clearly show different degrees of weathering. They range from Medium to light, and a few are just dulled down with varnishes.DSCF4772

O gauge Diesel Loco’s of Merlin’s Lane

When starting to build  Merlin’s Lane, I only actually had two loco’s, this was a bit of a leap of faith! Over the next two years I have managed to buy four more, mostly by selling off OO gauge stock and one layout. It was always going to be DCC but not originally sound, however this soon changed to sound. I guess the decision was – more loco’s or fewer loco’s with sound, the sound won! I will pad out the layout with a few wagons, they are much more affordable.

Here we go again! Sadly they have not been weathered yet! My first show with Merlin’s is the Bury St Edmunds Show and I really wanted to finish them, but it is unlikely.

I decided to go for 1965-68 period so that I could have a mix of Coloured Loco’s. Green, Blue or even a Maroon one! In an ideal world I would like two more loco’s for Merlin’s, a 08 green shunter and a Green loco with Full Yellow Panels..

O Gauge BR(W) Push-Pull Set

Now, I am not a Western Region Steam person. I do have a couple of O gauge Western region Diesels, but that’s about it. However when these arrived for a light weathering, I just thought, wow, they are lovely, really lovely. These are Lionheart Models and apparently purchased from Tower Models at discounted prices. Sadly now all gone, however they are due to reappear under Dapol ownership next year.

N Gauge Miscellany

Below are some of my son’s N Gauge Loco’s, coaches, wagons and departmental items. Most are RTR, but there are some kit builds and conversions. We have many more kits to build and a host of weathering to be done.
