Another wagon now finished is the machinery wagon with generators for 4000 yards,- this is a Swift Sixteen product and an excellent kit. Again the photo’s taken on my O Gauge photo plank.

Well, after what seems a very long time, we have now finished the Tin Turtle. I have managed to take a few photo’s between showers today. Please note these photo’s were not taken on 4000 yards but on my O Gauge photo plank!

I have now made bales of ‘fodder’ for the type R wagons. Fodder was an overall term for the horses feed, it could be made up of various plants. I have made hay bales cut from grass land. These were made from a softwood base with glued on chopped coloured hair and bound by wire. Not perfect – but they look the part.
Weathered

Now loaded with the removable bales of hay

Here are three class R wagons, used mainly for provisions etc. There were several different types made for the WD, but also quite a lot of commandeered ones from various sources. These three are generic, but are the correct length etc.
I purchased some 7mm hay bales and hope to set up a production line making some in 16mm – must feed the horses! They are varnished, but not weathered yet!
Also pleased to say we are now up to four Exhibitions in 2019 with the layout.

Its been a while since I updated this thread – anyway, Graham came to see me today and we added some signs, ammo boxes and rifle boxes to the layout. These were made by Graham and very good they look.
We also took a few photo’s of part finished wagons and posed the 18 pounder field gun that Graham is working on. We still have some more packing cases to add, mainly ammo boxes and .303 rifle boxes. I have also purchased some ‘hay bales’ to add to wagons later.
Even although it is not finished, we are likely to have at least three exhibitions with the layout next year. I am sure we will be ready for the first in April at Stowmarket.

Just when you thought you have finished another job comes along. Even although I made the height of the old barn to scale plus an extra mm or two, it’s not until you actually test the tallest piece of rolling stock that you find models can differ from scale.
Anyway the height had to be increased by 5mm, I decided to increase the height by 9mm, just to be on the ‘safe-side’.This is because 9mm fitted in with the stone brick formations.
I have also amended the barn side on the viewing side to hopefully enhance the viewing. I had to cut and rejoin five pieces of the remaining embossed plastic as supplies were very low and I did not want to buy another whole sheet – strangely, it worked out fine!

As I said in a previous post, this was not what I had wanted, but the lack of scale materials hindered my progress. This Barn is very much made of G Scale Garden Railway materials and as such is treated more as ‘the scenic break’ rather than part of the layout.
I have also stencilled the name of the layout on the side.

Today I have added some boxes to the layout – I thought I had enough, but after planting them I think at least another two packets are required. These are items that typify the advanced position of the WDLR.
Having been discussing a respectful name for the layout we have almost agreed that it should be called ‘4000 YARDS’ as this is the distance this type of railway was from the front line.

I have to say this is not what I intended the Barn to look like. I intended for the Barn to be a complete shambles, but the only scale materials I could get were very much garden railway materials and were very thick.
Everything has still to be weathered and distressed, with guttering added.
I have added some sand bags and grass inside the Barn rather than have a blank space.
I have also added a little brick/tile debris around the tracks.

Another busy weekend with lots of items added to enhance already added items. I have added the below Photo’s in the order the work was carried out. This I hope gives an insight into the steps made.
Cross wood frame and barbed wire

Duck boards for the trenches

Two types of barbed wire defences

Sand/soil for sand bags

Added grass and skinny shrubs

Extra grass and bushes
